EDITOR’S NOTE

This issue marks the beginning of the International Journal of Arts Management’s fifth year of publication. While any editor of a refereed journal is tormented by the prospect of a shortage of manuscripts, that is fortunately not the case with IJAM. As a matter of fact, all three issues of Volume 5 are already set, lending support to our conviction that there is a real need in the market for a publication such as ours.

One constant we have observed in all our volumes, including the current one, is the gradual increase in the number of articles dealing with issues of marketing and strategic management. This trend reveals a preoccupation with leadership in the arts sector, in terms of both the leadership shown by managers and leadership in the choice of market approach.

In these times of globalization dominated by technology, performing arts companies and heritage institutions are finding it increasingly difficult to stay afloat. While the leading professional associations address this issue at their annual meetings, academics organize conferences on the subject, and the management literature has kept up with the trend by publishing articles focusing on leadership issues. Thus each issue of Volume 5, particularly our spring 2003 issue, will present articles on this subject, as part of our modest contribution to the debate.
