For this issue of the Journal, we have chosen articles that focus on consumers of art and culture and on new ways of introducing or attracting them to cultural organizations and events. The first article explores the organization of cultural events in a context of territorial autonomy. The authors, Arnaud, Soldo and Keramidas, examine this new approach to mobilizing communities and consumers around a local cultural event, Picasso-Aix 2009, and its ability to foster territorial proximity.

In the next article, Jarrier and Bourgeon-Renault look at the experience of people who use interactive tools during a visit to a museum in an attempt to determine whether such tools have the power to draw visitors to fine art museums.

The consumer is also the focus of an article by Uusitalo, Simola and Kuisma comparing consumer perceptions of abstract art and figurative art. In their study, conducted in Finland, the authors showed 40 paintings by contemporary artists to 32 participants and observed and analyzed their eye movements in order to determine consumer preferences with respect to the two art forms.

The next contribution, by Damien Chaney, deals with consumers in the recording industry. Based on interviews, the author observes the role that consumers play in the evolution of trends on the supply side of the recording industry, a sector that is undergoing major changes.

The issue winds up with the Company Profile written by Guintcheva and Passebois-Ducros. This piece, about the Lille Metropolitan Art Programme, echoes the first article by presenting concrete examples of cultural alliances formed between several organizations in order to attract visitors and facilitate cooperation with a view to an integrated cultural offering.
